History of Christianity<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Church history is so vital and helpful to the task of the preacher, but it is not often used.\u00a0 Many books could be listed as helpful, but it has been a difficult task for me to find one or two to list as the basic necessity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">General<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0 A good concordance whether electronic or paper.\u00a0 Any of the major ones available are fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0 See the reading list at CRC&#8217;s website (www.churchreform.org), though it&#8217;s point is to list many good books to read, whereas the point here is to keep this list to a minimum for the basic library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> Don&#8217;t Bother With:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0 The generic commentary sets like the Pulpit Commentary, etc.\u00a0 It is a much better use of money to buy good individual commentaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0 Older word study sets (Vines, Wuest, Robertson, AGM [Spiros Zodhiates], etc.).\u00a0 The material is usually quite dated and in some just wrong.\u00a0 Kittel, Colin Brown, can be useful if used properly.\u00a0 VanGemeren on the OT looks promising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0 Don&#8217;t waste good money on illustration books.\u00a0 Instead listen, observe life, think, and read for yourself.\u00a0 Illustrations will arise from these things.\u00a0 It is still helpful to have some sources to mine for illustrations but for this old Readers Digests are very useful (and can be found for cheap) and other books like Bennett&#8217;s <em>Book of Virtues<\/em>.\u00a0 Often OT stories and church history provide great illustrations which will acquaint your hearers with important things while also illustrating (similarly, world history and classic literature can be good sources).\u00a0 Lastly, people tend to give you these kind of books anyway, so even if it is useful to have a couple, they will likely come this way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Comments on Commentary Series:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">BEC- Baker Exegetical Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">EBC- Expositor&#8217;s Bible Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ICC- International Critical Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">IVPNT- IVP New Testament Commentaries<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NAC- New American Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NIBC- New International Biblical Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NIC- New International Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: Biblical Commentary<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Series have different purposes and biases and it may be useful to have a basic understanding of these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Series based on the Greek text and therefore more technical in focus:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">BEC- newer series, seems to be the most conservative of the technical series listed here<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ICC- Old standard with volumes being updated.\u00a0 In general it is the least conservative of the series listed, though there are some more conservative ones (e.g. Marshall &amp; Cranfield)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">WBC- Claims to be evangelical but this obviously encompasses a broad definition of the term.\u00a0 It varies greatly from volume to volume<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NIGTC- Basically evangelical<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> Useful Extras:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em> The Theological Journal Library<\/em>&#8211; contains full text articles from several evangelical journals as well as some other useful material.\u00a0 For about $100 it looks to be good value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.galaxie.com\/html\/tjlcd.htm\"> http:\/\/www.galaxie.com\/html\/tjlcd.htm<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em> Reformation Overview- Video Curriculum<\/em> (CBD $60)- 6 videos (30 min each) covering key figures in the Reformation)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Audio tapes can be extremely useful particularly examples of solid expository preaching.\u00a0 In my mind, the best source for this is Don Carson&#8217;s webstore, Christway Media (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christwaymedia.com\/\">http:\/\/www.christwaymedia.com\/<\/a>).\u00a0 One large reason for this is they have tapes of Carson himself who is in my opinion one of the best expositors today.\u00a0 They also have tapes from like-minded people such as Ray Ortlund, Jr. and Mark Dever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> Other &#8220;Recommended Books&#8221; Lists:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: Zuck. <em>Bibliography for Old Testament Exegesis and Exposition<\/em> (Dallas Theological Seminary, 1979).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rosscup, James E. <em>Commentaries for Biblical Expositors<\/em> (Author, 1983).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spurgeon, Charles H. <em>Commenting and Commentaries<\/em> (BOT, 1969)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stitzinger, James F. &#8220;Study Tools for Expository Preaching,&#8221; in <em>Rediscovering Expository Preaching<strong>[9]<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wiersbe, Warren W. <em>A Basic Library for Bible Students<\/em> (Baker, 1981)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref1\"> [1]<\/a> Spurgeon&#8217;s <em>Treasury of David<\/em> can be a mine of useful information and application but must be under the control of careful exegesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref2\"> [2]<\/a> I am not impressed with the other WBC volumes on Psalms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref3\"> [3]<\/a> Currently these include expositions of Matt 5-7 (Sermon on the Mount), Matt 8-10, John 14-17, 1 Cor 1-4, 1 Cor 12-14, 2 Cor 10-13, Philippians, and the prayers in Paul&#8217;s letters.\u00a0 The titles of some vary between American and British editions.\u00a0 Some have gone out of print, but I would not expect them to stay out long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref4\"> [4]<\/a> Of course I disagree with his views on authorship and 1 Tim 2, but this is a good commentary, providing probably the best coverage of the issues and interaction with secondary literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref5\"> [5]<\/a> Really good with putting it altogether though I disagree with his interpretation of 1 Timothy 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref6\"> [6]<\/a> Disappointingly favors pseudonymity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref7\"> [7]<\/a> The technical standards are Brown (Anchor) and Smalley (WBC), but I am not particularly satisfied with them.\u00a0 They are useful but I cannot list them as a basic part of the library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref8\"> [8]<\/a> The best edition is the 2 volume set in the Library of Christian Classics, ed. John T. McNeill.\u00a0 The translation is more readable and the annotations can be helpful.\u00a0 Other editions may be cheaper, but this one is worth the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.edu\/personal\/rvannest\/Professional\/Preacher%27s%20Library.htm#_ftnref9\"> [9]<\/a> This essay has a number of useful thoughts but the list of recommended books is poor in my opinion.\u00a0 It recommends many books that will be of limited use but significant cost and the list of commentaries, etc. is dated and seems a bit narrow, favoring dispensationalists.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preaching Piper, The Supremacy of God in Preaching* Azurdia, Arturo G.
