He reminds us of our utter dependence upon God to bless our efforts that they might be effective. This is a useful prayer we can appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Prayer for Power on the Means of Grace<\/strong><br \/>\nJohn Newton<\/p>\n<p>O Thou, at whose almighty Word<br \/>\nThe glorious light from darkness sprung,<br \/>\nThy quickening influence afford,<br \/>\nAnd clothe with power the preacher&#8217;s tongue.<\/p>\n<p>Though &#8217;tis Thy truth he hopes to speak,<br \/>\nHe cannot give the hearing ear;<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis Thine the stubborn heart to break,<br \/>\nAnd make the careless sinner fear.<\/p>\n<p>As when of old the water flowed<br \/>\nForth from the rock at Thy command,<br \/>\nMoses in vain had waved his rod,<br \/>\nWithout Thy wonder-working hand.<\/p>\n<p>As when the walls of Jericho,<br \/>\nDown to the earth at once were cast,<br \/>\nIt was Thy power that brought them low,<br \/>\nAnd not the trumpet&#8217;s feeble blast.<\/p>\n<p>Thus we would in the means be found,<br \/>\nAnd thus on Thee alone depend,<br \/>\nTo make the gospel&#8217;s joyful sound<br \/>\nEffectual to the promised end.<\/p>\n<p>Now, while we hear Thy Word of grace,<br \/>\nLet self and pride before it fall;<br \/>\nAnd rocky hearts dissolve apace,<br \/>\nIn streams of sorrow at Thy call.<\/p>\n<p>On all our youth assembled here,<br \/>\nThe unction of Thy Spirit pour;<br \/>\nNor let them lose another year,<br \/>\nLest Thou shouldst strive and call no more.<\/p>\n<p>Newton, John.
