O Thou, at whose almighty Word
\nThe glorious light from darkness sprung,
\nThy quickening influence afford,
\nAnd clothe with power the preacher’s tongue.<\/p>\n
Though ’tis Thy truth he hopes to speak,
\nHe cannot give the hearing ear;
\n‘Tis Thine the stubborn heart to break,
\nAnd make the careless sinner fear.<\/p>\n
As when of old the water flowed
\nForth from the rock at Thy command,
\nMoses in vain had waved his rod,
\nWithout Thy wonder-working hand.<\/p>\n
As when the walls of Jericho,
\nDown to the earth at once were cast,
\nIt was Thy power that brought them low,
\nAnd not the trumpet’s feeble blast.<\/p>\n
Thus we would in the means be found,
\nAnd thus on Thee alone depend,
\nTo make the gospel’s joyful sound
\nEffectual to the promised end.<\/p>\n
Now, while we hear Thy Word of grace,
\nLet self and pride before it fall;
\nAnd rocky hearts dissolve apace,
\nIn streams of sorrow at Thy call.<\/p>\n
On all our youth assembled here,
\nThe unction of Thy Spirit pour;
\nNor let them lose another year,
\nLest Thou shouldst strive and call no more.<\/p>\n
