I just received the latest copy of the John Newton Project<\/a> Prayer Letter, and it contained a few lines from Newton’s hymn “The Power of Grace.”\u009d I checked out cyberhymnal<\/a> for the rest of the hymn but they don’t have it. I finally found it at the Christian Classics Ethereal Library<\/a>. I really appreciated the poem so here it is in its entirety.<\/p>\n

The Power of Grace<\/strong>
\n
\n<\/strong>Happy the birth where grace presides
\nTo form the future life!
\nIn wisdom’s paths the soul she guides,
\nRemote from noise and strife.<\/p>\n

Since I have known the Savior’s name
\nAnd what for me he bore;
\nNo more I toil for empty fame,
\nI thirst for gold no more.<\/p>\n

Placed by his hand in this retreat,
\nI make his love my theme;
\nAnd see that all the world calls great,
\nIs but a waking dream.<\/p>\n

Since he has ranked my worthless name
\nAmongst his favored few;
\nLet the mad world who scoff at them
\nRevile and hate me too.<\/p>\n

O thou whose voice the dead can raise,
\nAnd soften hearts of stone,
\nAnd teach the dumb to sing thy praise,
\nThis work is all thine own!<\/p>\n

Thy wond’ring saints rejoice to see
\nA wretch, like me, restored
\nAnd point, and say, “How changed is he,
\nWho once defied the LORD!”\u009d<\/p>\n

Grace bid me live, and taught my tongue
\nTo aim at notes divine;
\nAnd grace accepts my feeble song,
\nThe glory, LORD, be thine!<\/p>\n
