{"id":4158,"date":"2013-11-04T05:56:44","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T09:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rayvanneste.com\/?p=4158"},"modified":"2013-11-03T17:58:30","modified_gmt":"2013-11-03T21:58:30","slug":"happy-birthday-samuel-davies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rayvanneste.com\/?p=4158","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday, Samuel Davies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday was the 290<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the birth of Samuel Davies (1723-1761), a powerful preacher during the Great Awakening in colonial America. Davies was a skilled orator whose rhetorical style influenced a young Patrick Henry. He eventually succeeded Jonathan Edwards as president of the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton). On one fundraising trip for the College, King George II of England invited him to preach at the royal chapel. Reportedly, when the king whispered during the sermon, Davies stopped and directly addressing the king, said, \u201c<em>When the lion roars, all the animals in the jungle fall silent; and when the Lord speaks, the kings of the earth shut their mouths<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davies also wrote poems and was one of the first hymn writers in colonial America. My hymn of the week is this poem which beautifully describes the call and free offer of the gospel.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe Fountain\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(The Invitations of the Gospel)<\/p>\n<p>Today the living streams of grace<br \/>\nFlow to refresh the thirsty soul;<br \/>\nPardon and life and boundless bliss<br \/>\nIn plenteous rivers round us roll.<\/p>\n<p>Ho, ye that pine away and die,<br \/>\nCome, and your raging thrist allay;<br \/>\nCome all that will, here&#8217;s rich supply,<br \/>\nA fountain that shall ne&#8217;er decay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Come all,&#8221; the blessed Jesus cries,<br \/>\n&#8220;Freely My blessings I will give.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe Spirit echoes back the voice,<br \/>\nAnd bids us freely drink and live.<\/p>\n<p>The saints below, that do but taste,<br \/>\nAnd saints above, who drink at will,<br \/>\nCry jointly, &#8220;Thirsty sinners! haste,<br \/>\nAnd drink, the spring&#8217;s exhaustless still.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Let all that hear the joyful sound,<br \/>\nTo spread it through the world unite;<br \/>\nFrom house to house proclaim it round,<br \/>\nEach man his fellow man invite.<\/p>\n<p>Like thirsty flocks, come let us go;<br \/>\nCome every color, every age;<br \/>\nAnd while the living waters flow,<br \/>\nLet all their parching thirst assuage<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday was the 290th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Davies (1723-1761), a powerful preacher during the Great Awakening in colonial America.
