William Cowper knew what it was to be discouraged, and, thus, he wrote compellingly to this struggle. My poem of the week this week is one of Cowper\u2019s which calls the discouraged saint to look to biblical examples of the Lord\u2019s care and intervention in order to hold fast. The last two lines are my favorite.<\/p>\n
THE SAINTS SHOULD NEVER BE DISMAYED<\/strong><\/p>\n
The saints should never be dismayed,
\nNor sink in hopeless fear;
\nFor when they least expect His aid,
\nThe Savior will appear.
\nThis Abr\u2019am found: he raised the knife;
\nGod saw, and said, \u201cForbear!
\nYon ram shall yield his meaner life;
\nBehold the victim there.\u201d<\/p>\nOnce David seemed Saul\u2019s certain prey;
\nBut hark! the foe\u2019s at hand;
\nSaul turns his arms another way,
\nTo save th\u2019invaded land.
\nWhen Jonah sunk beneath the wave,
\nHe thought to rise no more;
\nBut God prepared a fish to save,
\nAnd bear him to the shore.<\/p>\nBlest proofs of power and grace divine,
\nThat meet us in His Word!
\nMay every deep felt care of mine
\nBe trusted with the Lord.
\nWait for His seasonable aid,
\nAnd though it tarry, wait:
\nThe promise may be long delayed,
\nBut cannot come too late.<\/p>\n
