\"\"In his classic biography of Martin Luther, Here I Stand<\/a><\/em>, Roland Bainton records Luther\u2019s hymn, \u201cIn Devil\u2019s Dungeon Chained I Lay.\u201d What a beautiful, poetic proclamation of the gospel! How I need to be reminded that God \u201cturned to me his father heart\u201d and then to hear the Lord Jesus say, \u201cHold thou to me, from now on thou wilt make it\u201d!<\/p>\n

I have posted it on my office door for this week\u2019s poem of the week.<\/p>\n

“In devil’s dungeon chained I lay
\nThe pangs of death swept o’er me.
\nMy sin devoured me night and day
\nIn which my mother bore me.
\nMy anguish ever grew more rife,
\nI took no pleasure in my life
\nAnd sin had made me crazy.<\/p>\n

Then was the Father troubled sore
\nTo see me ever languish.
\nThe Everlasting Pity swore
\nTo save me from my anguish.
\nHe turned to me his father heart
\nAnd chose himself a bitter part,
\nHis Dearest did it cost him.<\/p>\n

Thus spoke the Son, “Hold thou to me,
\nFrom now on thou wilt make it.
\nI gave my very life for thee
\nAnd for thee I will stake it.
\nFor I am thine and thou art mine,
\nAnd where I am our lives entwine,
\nThe Old Fiend cannot shake it.”<\/p>\n
