The area is stunningly beautiful and it&#8217;s history is rich. One aspect of its history is the fact that Covenanters were imprisoned here because of their allegiance to Christ (see photo below). Shep Shepherd recently pointed out to me this wonderful poem which reflects on the suffering of the Covenanters here.<\/p>\n<p>THE SONG OF THE PRISONERS<br \/>\nGEORGE PAULIN.<\/p>\n<p>BY the walls of old Dunnottar<br \/>\nBooms the breaking billow&#8217;s roar,<br \/>\nO&#8217;er the whitening crest of surges<br \/>\nSounds the ocean dirge of yore;<br \/>\nAs they, rushing, burst in thunder<br \/>\nOn Dunnottar&#8217;s stormy shore.<\/p>\n<p>Oft the music of the billows<br \/>\nMingled with the covenant psalm,<br \/>\nWhen the dungeons of Dunnottar<br \/>\nHeld the followers of the Lambs<br \/>\nMen who now in heaven are wearing<br \/>\nRound their brows the victor&#8217;s palm.<\/p>\n<p>For the westland wild and moorland,<br \/>\nHunted by the fierce Dundee,<br \/>\nBound and bleeding, now they listened,<br \/>\nAs the surging of the sea<br \/>\nShoreward broke, and breaking, mingled<br \/>\nWith their westland melody.<\/p>\n<p>Deem not, tyrants, ye have conquered,<br \/>\nThough our sires and sons are dead,<br \/>\nAnd our limbs are bound and bleeding,<br \/>\nWe have triumphed in our Head!<br \/>\nFor the bridge and braes of Bothwell<br \/>\nWith the blood of Christ are red.<\/p>\n<p>But a time the time is coming,<br \/>\nWhen the mosses of the West,<br \/>\nAnd the dungeons of Dunnottar,<br \/>\nAnd the Bass&#8217;s rocky breast,<br \/>\nShall, upheaving, gladly usher<br \/>\nForth, an army of the blest.<\/p>\n<p>Sing, then sing, ye solemn surges!<br \/>\nShout thy thunders, mighty main!<br \/>\nOurs is but a light affliction,<br \/>\nFitting us for glory&#8217;s strain,<br \/>\nWhen we meet our slaughter&#8217;d kindred,<br \/>\nWith the Lamb who once was slain!<\/p>\n<p>We shall rise above Dunnottar,<br \/>\nRise above the sounding sea;<br \/>\nRise above the western moorlands,<br \/>\nGlorious, beautiful, and free;<br \/>\nMeet in cloud of light the Bridegroom<br \/>\nNone so beautiful as He!<\/p>\n<p>He shall say, &#8220;Arise, my fair one!&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd the shades shall flee away,<br \/>\nAnd the sleep of death be broken,<br \/>\nAnd the grave be light as day.<br \/>\nAnd the sunshine of the &#8220;ages<br \/>\nNever ending,&#8221; round us play.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-xpt1\/v\/t1.0-9\/535962_595384873592_147363001_n.jpg?oh=a7f3e9260e310bcf231e587d7e8310b3&amp;oe=55C442E5&amp;__gda__=1439233457_97eae75a83848bdac2b06ab556e0e91e\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of our favorite sites in Scotland is Dunnottar Castle.
