{"id":4684,"date":"2015-11-02T18:26:05","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T22:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rayvanneste.com\/?p=4684"},"modified":"2015-11-02T18:26:05","modified_gmt":"2015-11-02T22:26:05","slug":"for-all-the-saints-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rayvanneste.com\/?p=4684","title":{"rendered":"For All the Saints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My poem of the week this week is William How\u2019s magnificent hymn, \u201cFor All the Saints.\u201d Sung to Ralph Vaughan Williams majestic tune, \u201cSine Nomine\u201d- particularly with a good pipe organ- this is one of my favorites- a grand tune reminding us of the great cloud of witnesses about us. I rarely can get through the last verse without choking up. Following the preceding verses it is a powerful reminder to me that I am a part of a great host from across time who have found God faithful.<\/p>\n<p>I have never heard all the verses sung, but they are all worth reading.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For all the saints, who from their labors rest,<br \/>\nWho Thee by faith before the world confessed,<br \/>\nThy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;<br \/>\nThou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;<br \/>\nThou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>For the Apostles\u2019 glorious company,<br \/>\nWho bearing forth the Cross o\u2019er land and sea,<br \/>\nShook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee:<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>For the Evangelists, by whose blest word,<br \/>\nLike fourfold streams, the garden of the Lord,<br \/>\nIs fair and fruitful, be Thy Name adored.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>For Martyrs, who with rapture kindled eye,<br \/>\nSaw the bright crown descending from the sky,<br \/>\nAnd seeing, grasped it, Thee we glorify.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>O blest communion, fellowship divine!<br \/>\nWe feebly struggle, they in glory shine;<br \/>\nAll are one in Thee, for all are Thine.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold,<br \/>\nFight as the saints who nobly fought of old,<br \/>\nAnd win with them the victor\u2019s crown of gold.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,<br \/>\nSteals on the ear the distant triumph song,<br \/>\nAnd hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>The golden evening brightens in the west;<br \/>\nSoon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest;<br \/>\nSweet is the calm of paradise the blessed.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;<br \/>\nThe saints triumphant rise in bright array;<br \/>\nThe King of glory passes on His way.<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p>From earth\u2019s wide bounds, from ocean\u2019s farthest coast,<br \/>\nThrough gates of pearl streams in the countless host,<br \/>\nAnd singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost:<br \/>\nAlleluia, Alleluia!<\/p>\n<p><em>Words:<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberhymnal.org\/bio\/h\/o\/w\/how_ww.htm\">William W.
