This week a new booked edited by Justin Wainscott and myself and published by Union University Press was released: Lest We Forget: Founders\u2019 Day Addresses\u00a0from Union University, Bicentennial Edition<\/em><\/a>. I am excited to see this come to fruition. This is now the second published volume of Founders’ Day addresses from Union. The previous book was From the Cloud of Witnesses<\/em> (Borderstone Press, 2014). This new book contains every Founders’ Day address since that book plus several other items including an address from a Homecoming chapel, Union’s new alma mater with with explanation of the ideas and music involved, and the bicentennial commencement address in which Union president, Dr. Dub Oliver, adapted Union’s first ever address, given by then president Joseph H. Eaton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did we work to publish this book? There are several reasons, but foremost is this, as Justin expressed it: because we believe the history of Union University should be shared and celebrated. There is so much in our history to appreciate, but it can\u2019t be appreciated if it isn\u2019t known. Therefore, we wanted to help make some of those stories and some of that history known so that it might be better appreciated. That is the primary impetus behind our annual Founders\u2019 Day Chapel, and that was the primary impetus behind the book. As both alumni and faculty of Union, we recognize that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves. We owe it to those who have gone before us not to forget their sacrifices, and we owe it to those who will come after us to pass on this history so that it will be appreciated and preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
