About a week ago I heard a guy on ESPN complaining about it (his name has escaped me) and I remember thinking, &#8220;He is making a religious argument.&#8221;\u009d He was essentially arguing that the Super Bowl was sacred space that was sullied by such discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Then, today, I read <a href=\"http:\/\/community.icontact.com\/p\/shepherdpress\/newsletters\/shepherding\/posts\/the-holiest-day-of-the-year-newsletter-85\">the latest Shepherd Press newsletter<\/a> which quoted sports writer Greg Doyle as saying this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And I&#8217;m not complaining about the ad because it&#8217;s anti-abortion and I&#8217;m not. I&#8217;m complaining about the ad because it&#8217;s pro-politics. And I&#8217;m not. Not on Super Sunday. If you&#8217;re a sports fan, and I am, that&#8217;s the holiest day of the year. That&#8217;s a day for five hours of football pregame shows and four hours of football game and three hours of postgame football analysis. That&#8217;s a day for football addicts to gorge themselves to the gills on football.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a day to discuss abortion. For it, against it, I don&#8217;t care what you are. On Super Sunday, I don&#8217;t care what <em>I<\/em> am. Feb. 7 is simply not the day to have that discussion.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow! Someone will say he is intentionally exaggerating.\u00a0 However, notice that this event is supposed to nullify for the moment any other weighty matters.\u00a0 In other words it is sacred.\u00a0 Revealing.<br \/>\nWe are always a religious people.\u00a0 The only question is, &#8220;Who are the gods?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The flap over the Tim Tebow Super Bowl ad has been interesting and particularly revealing.
