He served as pastor, editor of the state paper, and denominational statesman championing the formation of schools and a mission board. Anthony Chute has written a fine overview of Mercer&#8217;s work in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=thechildrshou-20&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2F0865548757%2Fqid%3D1142887839%2Fsr%3D1-2%2Fref%3Dsr_1_2%3Fs%3Dbooks%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D283155\"><em>A Piety Above the Common Standard<\/em><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"dffxnkquehheesbumvmf\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=thechildrshou-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>. You can see my review of Chute&#8217;s book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.founders.org\/FJ60\/reviews.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My point here, however, is to highlight his work in poetry, writing and compiling hymns. Mercer produced a popular compilation of American and British hymns entitled <em>The Cluster of Spiritual Songs, Divine Hymns, and Sacred Poems<\/em>. The following hymn is #5 in the cluster, and I have recorded (from when I borrowed a copy of the Cluster) that Mercer was the author of this hymn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Grace, All-conquering and charming&#8221;\u009d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legion was my name by nature,<br \/>\nSatan raged within my breast;<br \/>\nNever misery was greater,<br \/>\nNever sinner more posses&#8217;d.<br \/>\nMischievous to all around me,<br \/>\nTo myself the greatest foe;<br \/>\nThus I was, when Jesus found me,<br \/>\nFilled with madness, sin, and woe.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in this forlorn condition,<br \/>\nWhen he came to set me free,<br \/>\nI reply&#8217;d to my Physician,<br \/>\n&#8220;What have I to do with thee?&#8221;\u009d<br \/>\nBut he would not be prevented,<br \/>\nRescued me against my will;<br \/>\nHad he staid till I&#8217;d consented,<br \/>\nI had been a captive still.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jesse Mercer could be described as the leading Baptist in Georgia in the first half of the 19th century.
